What started off with three friends hosting dinner parties in their house located in Saint Germain de Pres, progressed to become a full time job for Jean Baptiste, as an Event Manager for Bagatelle. Built as a hunting lodge on a bet between Marie Antoinette and the Count of Artois, it is one of the most exhilarating places for dinner, unusual entertainment (think chickens playing instruments) and dancing in the city.
So here is a list of the places off the beaten track, in JB’s own words:
Cool + Sustainable
Le Comptoir Général A cultural centre open to everyone, made from reclaimed materials from the street. It's a museum, a bar, a cinema and a restaurant all at once. Good for family brunch, hosting cool projects and supporting political movements.
Beef Club. Crazy meat place - it was opened by one of my friends, but that’s not why I love it.
Raspoutin (58 Rue de Bassano, 75008 Paris). If it’s not my own parties, it is Rasputin for the Russian mood.
A Slice of Gateau/ Offbeat Laduree
Le Loir dans la Théière (3 rue des Rosiers 75004). Amazing homemade cakes in the Les Marais.
A Cozy Parisian Breakfast
La Chambre aux Oiseaux. It only has three tables, but they serve carrot cake and amazing juice.
Poilâne of course.
An Intimate Dinner without the Snootiness
Ferdi (32 Rue du Mont Thabor). A tiny eclectic restaurant, that is all about the atmosphere. You are part of the show and the whole place is decorated with old toys of the owner’s son (Ferdinand). Best burgers - you have to book one week in advance.
Farm to Table Restaurant
Le Verre Volé. Organic wines, with food coming from French farms from all over the country
For Coffee Table Books
0FR. Has a finger on what’s good at the moment, especially when it comes to design books and limited editions.
Librairie La Hune (170, boulevard Saint-Germain). When I need silence I head to La Hune library in l’apres Saint Germain. Novels, books about French writers and anything for the mind.
Best Museum (besides the Louvre)
Musée de la Vie Romantique a romantic private mansion in the heart of the Pigalle district, boasting the memories of George Sand and Frédéric Chopin, a winter garden and a tea room set up in the conservatory in the early days of summer.
Best Chocolat Chaude
Angelina! The most creamy, thick hot chocolate in Paris.
